Customer Challenge: Geo Grids are used to help in soil stabilization. While being used in these applications, these fabrics are exposed to many effects from both the soil and the atmosphere. A leading manufacturer of Geo Grids was struggling with how to provide a durable coating for their substrate that would withstand the many different types of material their product would be used with, while being able to be economically competitive in the marketplace.
MarChem Solution: MarChem chemists and engineers worked with the customer to fully understand what was needed. We immersed ourselves in the industry to find out as much as we could. Armed with this information, we developed a polymer compound that allowed the Geo Grid manufacturer to achieve higher junction strengths while using less plastisols. This helped keep cost down and reduce the coating weight of the material. While doing this, the product was also improved in its ability to withstand the Ultra Violet and environmental effects the product faces during its life.
Customer Benefit: With the new coating, the Geo Grid manufacturer was able to use woven fabrics, as opposed to knitted fabrics. Using this type of substrate not only brought down the costs, it also opened up the company to use many different types of fabric orientations and patterns. The Geo Grid manufacturer finally had a product that not only was less costly to manufacture, but it had superior performance characteristics to anything else on the market, causing their market share to grow significantly.
